Return of the 52-Week Illustration Challenge, Week 6

Week 6: Magic

Folded and freehand-cut collage pieces in watercolour paper and black card, with watercolour shading. Elements are glued to a backing of yellow card, layered with red and yellow sheets of glitter mesh fabric. One bird is sandwiched between the layers of mesh.

Our team managed to retain our crown as trivia champs. We did tie with another table, but they had poached our sport and music expert from last year. A fun night!

Green, green, green!

By happenstance, the replacement hat wasn't needed...

The end, but yet not the end

The school students finish up today, but New South Wales public school teachers have two more days on duty. Hard to think about planning for next year when you're tired from teaching this year...

The money saved by the government on those two days of students' free travel (ie. because they won't be coming to school those last two days) was diverted to pay teacher salary increases earlier in the year. But with everyone looking so weary this week (party days, report cards, room clean-ups, Year 6 farewells, library stocktakes) I'm not sure how enthusiastic we'll be about two days of professional development when the rest of the world is seemingly off Christmas shopping.



Today's pic: Superman cap given to me as an end-of-year gift by two of my most enthusiastic young library patrons! They know me too well.

Down Under to boldly go down under

JJ Abrams' "Star Trek" movie is almost upon us, but it's just been announced that our own Sydney Opera House is the venue for the world premiere/official preview!

Paramount Pictures Australia announced yesterday that Sydney will host the special screening event in front of 1,600 "tastemakers", ah... guests - in the Sydney Opera House Concert Hall on Tuesday, April 7.

The premiere will feature director/producer JJ Abrams and cast members Eric Bana (Nero), Chris Pine (Kirk), Zachary Quinto (Spock) and Karl Urban (McCoy) presenting the movie. They will be supported by Zoe Saldana (Uhura), Simon Pegg (Scott) and presumably Aussie actor, Chris Hemsworth, who's playing Kirk's father, George Kirk Sr. Following this world premiere, an international tour launches: to countries such as Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Japan, Korea, Netherlands and New Zealand.

"Not only are we honored to have JJ Abrams and the cast here in Sydney for the World Premiere of the stunning new STAR TREK," said Mike Selwyn, Managing Director of Paramount Pictures Australia, of the world premiere, "we are also very excited to present this event at one of Australia's - and the world's - most famous locations, Sydney Opera House."

It is slated to open in US cinemas on May 8, but thanks to our differing release schedules and the International Date Line, Australia gets its regular release a considerable number of hours earlier, too.

I've put out a few feelers to see if I actually rank as a "Sydney tastemaker", or even as the "nerdy friend of a Sydney tastemaker", who perhaps has a double pass and no date on the night already.

Have phaser in pocket, am pleased to see you, and will travel.

'Tis the day to wear orange and consider... world harmony. Bill the Cat seemed fairly incongruous in today's hat parade at school but - hey! - at least he was orange!

Even though she wasn't of Irish descent, my grandmother Jessie made a point of wearing green - and carrying her leprechaun charm - on St Patrick's Day, which was also her birthday.
